This years's Birdathon was April 12 Thru April 27

Please help us with our annual fundraiser, Birdathon 2008. The money is used for
environmental education, to pay for our newsletter, to bring in out-of-town speakers
for special programs. We place 65 to 80 Audubon adventure kits in local counties
4th, 5th, and 6th grade classes, at no cost to the public schools, and each kit costs
the chapter $45. Very little of the annual dues paid to the National Audubon Society
returns to the local chapters, so your support of this fundraiser is critical to our
continued success. Please help the volunteers who work so hard year round to
make this chapter's efforts a success.

You may pledge to one of our teams or to the chapter as a whole. Your pledge can
be a fixed dollar amount, or based on the number of species recorded by your team,
or to the chapters species total. Teams will have a 24 hour period in which to record
avian species (no one has yet birded the entire 24 hours!). Some teams have recorded
close to 150 species (not mine! we're closer to around 100), the chapter lists and totals
for the years 1998 though 2006 can be viewed at http://www.apalachee.org/birds.shtml

Birdathon 2008

Upcoming Events:

May 9-11, 2008
Weekend birding field trip to Kennesaw Mtn National Park, GA

The weekend will be very good for sighting migrating birds.
Meeting Time/place TBA
This is a semi-self guided field trip. Mountain Park opens at 7:30 am. At the far end of the parking lot in front of the visitors’ center is a paved road that leads up to the top of the mountain.  You will find several birders assembled at the bottom of the hill on the road and they will willingly welcome you to accompany them as they walk up the road to the mountain top. There will be Georgia Ornithological Society member that will be in the group that will be looking for AAS members to join them.

Other Birding Hot Spots: As you make friends with the birders at Kennesaw Mountain, they will tell you about the best places to bird that are near Atlanta and may even volunteer to accompany you. You may wish to acquire a copy of "A Birder’s Guide to Georgia" by Joel Hitt.  It has good descriptions of places to bird in Georgia. Some Hot Spots that we recommend are: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area; Chattahoochee Nature Center; Lake Acworth; Allatoona Lake; and E. L. Huie Land Application Facility.  (See map)

Lodging: There are many motels near Kennesaw Mountain. Those in Kennesaw, near Barrett Parkway, and along I-75 and I-575 tend towards the high end of the price range. Budget motels can be found in Acworth which is about 7 miles north of Kennesaw on I-75 towards Chattanooga (See map).

Travel: The distance from Tallahassee to the Park is approximately 300 miles. Traveling to the Park requires driving through Atlanta so it is best to schedule your trip so you do not pass through the city between 4 pm and 7 pm (See map).
