Interested in making your yard more attractive to birds and other wildlife? The Apalachee Audubon Society invites you to take a self-guided tour of local yards that are wildlife havens.
Each yard has unique features to attract a variety of birds and other wildlife such as wintering hummingbirds, orioles, tanagers, finches, and pine siskins as well as our year-round residents. You will be inspired to maintain your own yard or green space for wildlife, whether it is one bird feeder, one nest box, one wildflower bed, one garden path, or one natural area.

Mid-February may seem like an odd time for a yard tour in North Florida, everyone knows what happens to our yards in the wintertime. But all of us love nature and the “bones” of a yard shows, even in the dead of winter. This is not a garden show. We are looking for a yard that attracts wildlife with native vegetation, water sources—ponds or bird baths, and food sources—plants and/or bird feeders.
Being a yard host is NOT necessarily a major commitment of time on your part—just a willingness to allow people onto your property from 10 AM to 4 PM the day of the tour. You do not have to allow anyone in your house, and you can set up the tour of your yard however you wish. AAS will provide volunteer greeters, but you can choose to greet and interact with visitors, as do most of our yard hosts, or stay inside your home.
We have had successful and fun years putting on this event with typically 100-125 people making the rounds to the yards. Yard tour guests are very friendly and it is a fun day of meeting and talking with a lot of wonderful people!
